First thing to check is whether the software that you're using to edit can save the file as an mp3 (I would think so). If not, a quick Google search should locate freeware that will convert wav to mp3 on your computer.

Since the mp3 files are so much smaller than the wavs, you don't need to stint on quality (the application will probably give you a choice about this). Go for the highest sample rate, which will give you a file of about 1.5-2 Mb per minute of music---meaning upwards of 5 hours on one CD.
