Carrol: "Is capitalism at its best any better than capitalism at its worst?"

[WS:] That is easy - capitalism at its best is socialism or perhaps social democracy - definitely better for the majority of the population than crony capitalism for the rich and free market for everyone else.

I do not think they is any viable alternative to the rational organization of production of material goods synonymous with capitalism, anarchist fantasies notwithstanding. The only real question is the distribution of these goods - the more equitable the better. A capitalist mode of production coupled with institutional mechanisms of broad wealth distribution is called socialism or social democracy. A capitalist mode of production coupled with institutional mechanisms facilitating concentration of wealth is called monopoly capitalism or neoliberalism.
