[lbo-talk] Erdogan Islamizes education system to raise 'devout youth'

To paint a thorough picture of the existing situation, one has to
recall also a number of crucial steps taken in autumn 2014 to Islamize
education in line with the Sunni faith. First, at the beginning of
this school year, a considerable number of conventional secondary and
high schools were transformed into imam-hatip secondary and high
schools, which provide mostly religious education, without the consent
of students and parents.

According to statistics provided at the National Education Council by
Kamuran Karaca, head of the left-leaning Education and Science
Laborers Trade Union, the number of imam-hatip secondary schools rose
from 1,099 in 2013 to 1,355 in 2014. Including the separate imam-hatip
classes formed inside conventional secondary schools, the number of
secondary imam-hatip students rose from 94,000 to 240,000 in the past
year. During 2011-14, the Ministry of National Education converted
1,447 general high schools to imam-hatip schools.
