Carroll wrote, off-list, to a few people reporting his diagnosis and estimated time to live. It deeply saddened me, for I treasured his wisdom and steadfastness. His wife had died a few months earlier so he must have been suffering about that before adding his own illness to the mix. But his courage was/is inspiring. I am thankful for having known him, if only electronically.
