KLANSMEN ARE AMONG 10 INDICTED IN PLOT ON CARIBBEAN ISLAND NATION
A Federal grand jury today indicted 10 alleged mercenaries, six of them linked to the Ku Klux Klan, on charges of conspiring to overthrow the Government of the tiny Caribbean nation of Dominica.
The indictment charges that the men conspired to overthrow the Government of Prime Minister Mary Eugenia Charles and replace it with another headed by former Prime Minister Patrick John.
Charges of conspiracy to violate the Federal neutrality act and violation of various firearms, explosives and customs laws also were lodged against the defendants.
The group was arrested in a wooded area north of New Orleans on April 27, just as the men were to set sail on a 2,000-mile trip to the 29-by-16-mile island, 300 miles southeast of Puerto Rico and inhabited by blacks. They were heavily armed with automatic weapons, including Israeli Uzi submachine guns and dynamite.
The indictment states that on or about Sept 20, 1980, and continuing until April 27, the defendants conspired to mount an armed invasion of the island to depose the Prime Minister.
50-Year Sentence Is Possible
The maximum penalty for conviction on the charges is 50 years in prison and a fine of $33,000 in fines. Named in the indictments were Michael E. Perdue, 32 years old, of Houston, the alleged group leader; Steven D. Black, of Birmingham, Ala., Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan; Michael S. Norris, 21, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Wolfgang W. Droege, 31, of Toronto; Robert W. Prichard Jr., 30, of Raleigh, N.C.
Also, William B. Waldrop Jr., 33, of Braxton, Miss.; Christopher Anderson, 41, of Oklahoma City; Joe D. Hawkins, 37, of Smith County, Miss.; George T. Malvaney, 21, of Jackson, Miss., and Larry L. Jacklin, 22, of Listowell, Ontario, Canada.
David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, said he had been subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury because he knew some of those charged.
''I don't think it was any kind of K.K.K. thing,'' Mr. Duke said. ''I think it was an anti-Communist thing.'' Since the arrest of the group, a state of emergency has been declared in Dominica and Mr. John has been arrested on charges of plotting to overthrow the Government.
