i've already instituted this. i tell 'em all at the beginning of the semester that there are five slots for an A, open to those five who write the most obsequious essay. those five will be awarded As automatically if they make sure to bring me my coffee every day. i also ensure that's there's proper motivation among this subset too: possibility of an A+ for the one among this elite group who manages to figure out when it's one those daze when miss kelley needs decaf or one of those daze when she'd like real cream and sugar instead of black. getting a feel for my fickle tastes in this regard deserves an A+, i think.

"but, miss k, i rilly rilly need an A in this course. i'm flunking out of chem."

"so why aren't you in your chem prof's office whining?"

"well he's not very nice. i don't think he'd like that."

"so....how much money ya got?"

i got in trouble for that, though. dean wasn't amused.
