Immigrants from places like China, India, and Mexico, are frequently
brought to the U.S. and the forced into indentured servitude to pay off the
debts to the smugglers who brought them here. For example, I've heard
several stories about rich Indian professionals in the NYC area who
advertise in India for maids, promising all sorts of goodies; when the
women arrive here, their passports are taken and they're more or less
unable to leave their employers' houses. There are frequent stories about
farm workers, originally from Mexico and Central America, kept in virtual
slavery; there's a lot of tut-tutting in the press when the stories are
published, then things go back to exploitation as usual. Peter Kwong has
written a lot about indentured servitude among Chinese workers in New York
City.
