Jean Strouse is the woman you're thinking of and I saw her (hour long) interview in C-SPAN a couple of weekends back. I haven't read her book (and won't), but in an interview she talks frequently of what a great guy JP was. His passion for art and travel, blah blah blah. She was very interested in 'making him human'.
ps. the article on the "price of leadership" was a screamer.
