Acocella does talk about the way doctors elicited "multiples" from patients. Certainly the treeatment made the patients much worse -- cut them off from families and friends (ie secret members of Satanic cults), plunged them deeper into depression, destroyed their home life, made them see themselves as totally sick and unable to take action.
