Boerestaat Party cheers Mbeki Aids view Independent On-Line - April 19 2000 at 11:33PM ----------------------------------------------

Support for President Thabo Mbeki's controversial stance on Aids came from an unusual quarter on Wednesday when the rightwing Boerestaat Party applauded the president's efforts to "investigate the biggest hoax in the 20th century".

Boerestaat leader Coen Vermaak said for the first time the party supported a decision by Mbeki.

Mbeki has attracted international criticism for his apparent support of "dissident" scientists who argue that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) does not cause Aids and that anti-retroviral drugs AZT and Nevirapine do more harm than good in treating the disease.

Vermaak said the party had been saying for years that there was no such thing as an Aids epidemic.
