Mugabe denounces white farmers as enemies of state
HARARE: President Robert Mugabe told state television on Tuesday, the 20th
anniversary of Zimbabwe's independence, that white farmers were the enemies
of the state.
"Our present state of mind is that you (white farmers) are now our enemies
because you really have behaved as enemies of Zimbabwe," he said after his
anniversary address to the nation.
"That we are full of anger. Our entire community is angry and this is why
you have the war veterans now, you know, seizing land," Mugabe added.
His comments came after news had broken that a second white farmer had been
killed by alleged veterans of the 1970s war of liberation.
Earlier, he said he empathised with the frustration of landless blacks who
have occupied hundreds of white-owned farms for redistribution to black
peasants. (Reuters)
