...saw Woolworth's (a big supermarket, here) start a price war on milk by lowering the price of a quart below the cost of putting it on the shelf (American dairy farmers know what happens next), and Australian universities plan to give a grade-point-average break to new students who pay in full before the start of the semester.

The cost of trying to keep pace with the "global economy"? This was once a cool country.
