PLEASE SHARE THIS AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Organizing Meeting to Protest the Republicans at their National Convention!! Saturday, July 8 at 5pm at NYU Tisch Business School - located at 40 East 4th Street, Room UC-52 (in the basement)
The United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) is organizing this meeting and invites everyone interested to getting an update on what is planned and discussing how New Yorkers can mobilize for the activities Philadelphia to attend. The meeting is open to all organizations and individuals that want to help build a large New York presence in Philadelphia.
The Republican National Convention is being held in Philadelphia from July 31st to August 3rd. Attending its meetings and caviar/champagne cocktail parties will be some of the most evil people in politics today, including George W. Bush, Rudy Giuliani, George Pataki and a parade of their cohorts from around the country. In addition, upwards of 15,000 reporters and journalists will be in Philly.
Protests will begin on the Saturday (7/29) before the convention opens and will run through the week. There will be rallies for national health care; demonstrations to protest anti-poverty policies; direct action/non-violent civil disobedience to free Mumia Abu Jamal and demand an end to police brutality and the prison-industrial complex; a shadow convention; and much more. In addition, the Philadelphia city unions are threatening to strike for a decent contract during the Convention.
On Sunday, July 30th a mass march and rally (which has been given a permit) will encompass all the issues and bring together many diverse consitutencies. It is planned for Sunday so as many people as possible can attend - even if they can't participate in the other activities during the week.
