Yeah, but that was a long time ago. The USSR hoped that the socialist rhetoric of the early Zionists meant that maybe they would be friendly. Big mistake. The US also recognized Israel very early. After '56, and especially after '67, the Sovs got cozy with the Arabs and were hostile to Israel. And they never attacked a Muslim state; and they gave a lot of leeway to Muslims, though not fundamentalists, in the Islamic Republics of the FSU, at least after Stalin. jks
