Carl -- don't ever compare _any_ kind of bleak mood from happenings to clinical depression. On every single list of "Things that enrage" (enrage sufferers from depression) that occurs right at the top.

I've had a bleak mood -- after the death of my first wife. A psychiatrist told me the tale of a patient he had back before any treatment was really possible. She came in for this one appointment and (a) her husband and son had been in an auto accident: husband killed & son permanently crippled and (b) she had been diagnosed with cancer. Well how do you feel, he asked. Despite those blows -- she was feeling good: her depression was in a period of remission.

The feeling is totally different from the feeling that comes from clinical depression. One of the reasons I so detest the word melancholia is because it carries that comparison within it.
