Neither did I until Quake 2 came out, thus completing my earthly corruption. Weirdly, it was nothing I saw or heard, just this latent buzz, a scattered word of awe in the biz press.

Seattle socialism for the Taiwanese graphics card industry. MS has no software strategy; they bought Bungie's Halo, quite a nice game actually, but they have no Mario, Doom guy or Max Payne (which was ported to the XB and PS2). They'll have a few hit games, but they're just expanding other people's markets. To beat the Sony/Nintendo juggernaut, they have to do something risky -- going freeware on the gaming system, e.g. Won't happen, because the MS cash pile is $30 billion and Billion Dollar Bill has discovered Charity.
