"Predictable" in one sense, yes, but if the secular left had leadership of the Palestinian national liberation movement, defined its program, determined its strategies and tactics, etc., I doubt that we'd see exactly the same methods of struggles as we do today -- the methods mainly advocated by the Islamist wing of the movement.
That said, when we discuss war crimes, we are talking about a matter of justice, not of predictability. When the US government says, "Hey, war inevitably creates collateral damage," we don't let it off the hook. Likewise, we have to carefully evaluate the strategies and tactics of any national liberation movement. In fact, we had better _hold the side we do support to a higher standard, without demanding that it be pure and perfect_, for it will never be. -- Yoshie
