call centers

This report by Stephanie Luce on call centers gets a big "No shit!" response from me. I've worked a few different call center jobs. Pure hell. The worst I worked at must have been keenly aware of employee disgruntlement, as the break rooms and cafeteria had huge banners sayings "Have a Problem? Explore our Conflict Resolution program!" or something to that effect. In other words, "Please, God, don't unionize."

The other call center based job was tech support. Good pay (for my age), but still depressing and dehumanizing as fuck. I began to talk union at this job and met with either outright hostility or blank stares. Actually, one person was interested, and I found out later he was a neo-nazi who did webmastering for a white power site. I contacted the Communication Workers of America for help, and they never responded.
