The Buddha remarked 25 centuries ago or so that old age is one of the 4 
principal forms of suffering in life (the others being birth, illness, 
and death), and that the only real escape from them is realizing that 
there is no escape from reality.

But he was just one of those ancient religious nuts, I guess. Once the 
medical miracle-workers figure out how to keep our telomeres from 
shortening, we won't have to worry about getting old and dying.  :-)
