Thanks for a detailed criticism of Bar-Zohar's claims. I have not had a chance to read Frederick B. Chary's _The Bulgarian Jews and the Final Solution, 1940-1944_ yet, but I've looked up scholarly reviews of the book (which has been held up as the definitive book on the subject to this day). According to the reviews by Veselin Traikov (Slavic Review, 33.2, June 1974, pp. 384-386, <http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0037-6779%28197406%2933%3A2%3C384%3ATBJATF%3E2.0.CO%3B2-P> and Nissan Oren (The American Political Science Review, 69.3, September 1975, pp. 1063-1064, <http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0003-0554%28197509%2969%3A3%3C1063%3ATBJATF%3E2.0.CO%3B2-R>), Chary would have been able to document even a larger contribution of the Communists if he had been able to look into the (then new) documents in the Annals of the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria, etc. -- Yoshie
