There is an item in today's NRC Handelsblad by one of its correspondents
in Jakarta which indicates that Indonesia is seriously considering
replacing the dollar with the euro for its currency reserves. The article
quotes the VP Hamzah Hazas supporting the move. The Indonesians consider
the dollar "unstable".
The folks in the US Treasury must be having kittens at this kind of news.
An interesting development in light of some of the analyses floating
around which suggest fear of the euro being adopted by the members of OPEC
as part of the reason for the US's excursion into Iraq.
