the soy belt in southern brazil is roughly 18 million hectares - as of a week or so ago, there was enough GM soy seed in brazil to plant about 1,500 hectares for research

some estimate that about a third of the soy fields are planted with contaband GM soy - this from the BBC

soy in brazil is big business - MST farmers typically plant produce that can be sold locally, but it is true that MST farmers in the south are or were planting transgenic soy

millers in brazil are now it seems much evenly split about transgenic wheat - some of the big companies say that they will import it, others say they will not

consumer resistance is still strong, and the recent decision against GM soy by the BR attorney general is hopeful
