I'll bracket the quaint early-90s aspects of this argument - that only [insert demographic group here] is fit to talk about matters concerning [that same demographic group], and that the world is divided into white people and people of color (which mirrors the white racist's view of the world as being divided into white and nonwhite, with the nonwhites/PoCs sharing deep and mysterious affinities with each other, be they Japanese or Tanzanian). What interests me at the moment, given recent discussions, is how selective these demographic attentions are. For example, black Americans have been voting heavily for John Kerry in the Dem primaries, and are almost certain to vote in large numbers for whoever the Dem nominee is this fall. Those primary votes have been cast despite the presence of some seriously left-of-center candidates (Kucinich, Sharpton, and Braun, the last two of whom are black, and who should presumably benefit from that mysterious affinity). As Donna Brazile said the other day, she's been telling Sharpton that the main concern of the black electorate is getting rid of Bush, and all the evidence supports her analysis. As I've asked Cde Cox many times, in response to his frequent declarations that white leftists should yield to black leadership, why do you reject this position?
