Aryeh Neier of the ACLU, if memory serves, was the Executive Director of the ACLU when they defended the right of the Nazis to march in Skokie. Many of his extended family perished in the Holocaust.
ACLU, liberals, Steve? Well, I used to have a pamphlet of the NY Workers School (a CPUSA org.) class listings from 1928, Roger Baldwin, a founder of the ACLU, then still very much a united front radical, taught a class there. (As did Whittaker Chambers on English comp.!) Here in Northern Ca. the ACLU has staffers w/ backgrounds in the , "new communist movement, org. Line of March and the CPUSA split Committees of Correspondence for Democracy & Socialism. Until, just after the Stalin-Hitler Pact, the ACLU had on their National Board, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn and another CPUSA CC figure, if memory serves.
