That's better than giving to an individual Democratic candidate, but I thought that ACT's merit, if there is any, is that "they" (liberal rich guys like Soros) give "us" (activists) money to register voters, not the other way around.

No, but you aren't Bush, nor are you or most LBO-talkers even close to being rich. I'm talking about mainly the wage slave's mite and (to a lesser extent) the petty producer's mite (lawyers galore on LBO-talk). (The only rich guy who has ever subscribed to LBO-talk is probably an eccentric millionaire supporter of the Chinese Communist Party and sometime Asia Times contributor Henry C. K. Liu.)
