But DeGaulle first had long conversations with the French general staff; he was seriously afraid that the French Army would _not_ obey orders to suppress an insurrection. And had the French CP pretty much deliberately fucked up communication among different sectors of the uprising, there might have been much more of a question concerning the army. Precisely to the degree that a ruling class _must_ depend on the Army, that army becomes increasingly undependable. (Or, when ONLY force remains, _nothing_ remains.)
But the U.S. has huge police forces, and they are deadly. They were originally created to replace local constabulary and create a force hostile to the working class.
