These attacks on academic freedom seem to boil up periodically in this country, which has always been known for its anti-intellectualism and suspicion of anyone better-educated than average; the academy always seems to recover from them, or at least has up to now. The problem now is that tertiary education has been regarded by most of the country for a long time now as merely a route to a larger income. If this attitude takes hold, the public may demand that everything not related to this pecuniary purpose be eliminated from universities and colleges, especially everything that smacks of uncomfortable political controversy, any kind of challenging art, and the like. So I agree that it is important to mount a vigorous defense of academic freedom at this point. I think we should take a page from the right's book and organize students, many of whom even at this late date understand the importance of a truly free campus.
