All of this reminds me of the show on NPR Sunday evening. I didn't catch the name of the person who wrote the essay. It was read on the air by a woman--don't know if the person reading was the author. She talked about learning more about her religion -- from the sound of it, she was a Catholic. While working in the kitchen I listened to things she'd said she'd learned. Poking holes in the Old and New Testament. Stuff I'd never heard because, not being a recovering Catholic (or recovering religious anything for that matter), I just never dug into it too deeply. I'm sure the stuff she spoke of was old hat to those of you who study this stuff. E.g., she poked holes in the way Jesus treats women (stuff I _have_ read in feminist studies of religion), but she did it in a pretty funny way. She also pointed out how Jesus told followers to leave their families behind -- which I've heard before, but, again, she just wrote it in a really hilarious way.
I think she said something about how, when people wanted to rape Lot's male guests, Lot said no and offered them his daughters instead. Now, that was a new one on me.
She told an amusing story full of things like that and how she came not to believe at all, and then the things she thought such as, "Oh no. You mean Hitler's just dead? He's not being punished for eternity for what he did?" Followed by, "Oh no, my brother's just dead?"
I'm too lazy and intolerant of NPR's site to look ... OK, I just looked and I'm reminded once again of why I dislike that site. Anyone catch that show?
