In some ways, the current administration is an extension of the right-wing 
nut/militia/Tim McVeigh movement of the 1990s. Much of the latter movement 
mellowed and changed its tactics in a more peaceful ("work within the 
system") direction. The Bushmasters showed up to exploit their support and 
put some of their program (white male resentment, etc.) into practice. And 
they institute a CLAMPDOWN just because they can. They don't need all of 
provisions of the so-called Patriot Act but they push for protecting and 
extending it anyway. It's slower than in the Clash song, but it's there.
