Well, to be fair to this scumbag, it's not really weird at all in a sports conduct. In that context, Davis is a local saying Look, this is an *out of towner* -- the ultimate proof of perfidy among sports fans.
New York is extra special because everyone hates our teams no matter what the sport. Mainly because we're rich and we kick their ass using our money. They hate that.
(Not lately, to be sure for god's sakes, but as a general historical trend that formed the long-lived prejudices of sports fans.)
