This is not flippant usage. Religious affirmations are delusional and, to the extent they encroach on public affairs, deeply dangerous. Religion is inherently divisive and subversive of progressive politics. Willingness to tolerate pre-Enlightenment thinking in the public sphere in the name of building a broad front will avail the left nothing.
