[lbo-talk] Paradox

OK, I do not advocate Eurocop global policing. I don't accept Habermas' naivete. I am aware of the history of European colonialism, including relevantly recent nastiness like Algeria and Kosova. I think that Europe has changed somewhat for the better, partly out of laziness and cheapness, partly because the nostalgia for lost Empire has faded outside Britain and the populations are a lot more pacific. I do not think this makes Europe specially qualified for the job, but I also think that Europe is not going to volunteer for the job for all the reasons I have said. So the issue is sort of hypothetical and idle.

Furthermore, a good deal of my discussion was deliberately taking on the G7 perspective and contemplating what would be in the interests of imperialism from its own point of view -- not mine.

Incidentally, I think you are totally clueless about how bad things are here. I have often said that if we had here what you have in Germany, we'd think the revolution was over and we'd won. The distance between what it is like here for an ordinary middle class American who lives two missed mortgage payments away from sleeping in a cardboard box under the overpass, never mind for the working class, like the Hispanic families of my wife's students (she's a 4th grade teacher in a very poor district) who are all unemployed or in the service in Iraq, and what it's like for Germans or any citizens of the richer European countries is as great as between your condition and socialist revolution. It's fucking bad here, fella.
