I think I mentioned here once that my daughter started crawling one afternoon when I put on Iggy and the Stooges. She took off like a shot and never looked back. She also liked the Ramones when she was a toddler. Now that she's seven she's crazy for hip-hop and Hillary Duff and loves to hate whatever I put on.

Another thing I remember. Once, when she was still only weeks or at most only a few months old, the silent version of Hunchback of Notre Dame was on television. The sound was turned down and no one was really watching it, it was just on in the background. The kid caught a glimpse of the movie and began crying. It was the first time I recall her responding to anything on television. Not long after a friend was fooling around on the piano and kept hitting these low notes and letting them hang. She got scared then too. I remember thinking those are two things that always seem to frighten us, scary faces and low sustained notes. But it was something to see it happening in one so little.
