A spooky place I'm sure. I recall a letter sent by a survivor of the 1846-47 Donner Party horror, Virginia Reed, who was 12 years old during that infamous cannibalistic snowbound winter in the Sierra Nevada -- she didn't want to discourage other easterners who might want to resettle in California, but she cautioned against taking risky shortcuts or dawdling in the face of advancing winter: ''Oh, Mary. I have not wrote you half of the trouble we've had, but I have wrote you enough to let you know what trouble is. But thank God, we are the only family that did not eat human flesh. We have left everything, but I don't care for that. We have got through with our lives. Don't let this letter dishearten anybody. Remember, never take no cutoffs and hurry along as fast as you can.'' <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/donner/filmmore/pt.html>
