Jim:

Another example of us foolishly supporting the expansion of healthcare coverage under the existing system while it still exists, as opposed to rallying the masses behind far better health care plans proposed by the spartacist league, kropotkin, left business observer and jim straub.... ie international workers revolution for socialism!

[WS:] You do not need a revolution to accomplish that - social democracy will be more than enough - albeit to achieve that you will probably need to "drive the United States into the sea."

But more seriously, it is not the politicians - Republican or otherwise - who oppose a universal health care in this country, but business. Politicians simply take the cues from their business masters. This country is a democracy in the name only -in reality it is owned and operated by various business interests. What public wants does not count unless it offers profiteering opportunity for business.

The business opposes it not just for financial reasons (to lower their taxes), but mainly for political reasons. In the current system they control the level of hc benefits they provide, if any, and they can use to control labor. Under the universal hc system they lose that control - they have to pay for whatever level of coverage the state or the voters decide.

PS Sorry for the html junk, but it was already embedded in the email to which I am responding, and it is like AIDS - very difficult to get rid of once you get it.
