Hi folks

This is from another list - incredible. What a country!

Cut Here: By an overwhelming vote

the Cherokee amended their constitution that in effect nullified tribal

citizenship for nearly 3,000 members for having ancestors that included

people of African descent. The one-drop rule seems to have resurfaced

with a bite.

The history of the Cherokee Nation involves a mixed legacy of inclusion

and exclusion, though this latest act wasn’t the first. At one time,

for example, the Cherokees owned slaves.

For an overview on this issue, William Loren Katz, author of Black

Indians and the Black West has a brief review on the counterpunch.org

site for March 17/18, 2007.

Coming in tandem with the historical imagination that has helped fashion

the Jamestown commemoration, the terrain to deal with matters of social

justice regarding race and racism becomes more treacherous.
