Increasing imprisonment increases opportunities for investment. The increase in incarceration is surely going hand in hand with the increase in private operation of prisons and use of convict labor by corporations.

Blacks and other minorities as well as poor whites are exploitable within the prison system. Why worry about the magnitude of imprisonment. The greater the number incarcerated and the more punitive the system the better it is for those profiting from the prison-industrial complex.

The general public feels that they are safer the more those who break the law are incarcerated. They are thus willing to subsidise the costs of imprisonment while corporations are able to profit both from running the prisons and using convict labor.
