Since we aren't friends any more Chris, I'll remark that on reflection your response about my purported hate-filled fascism strikes rather chillingly as something disturbingly close to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. You know, about how the Jews hate God-fearing Russian people and want to rob, enslave, and kill them? It would bother me a more than little bit to call a black person who condemned white culture in America as backwards and racist a racist himself (I even choke at saying that about the members of the Nation of Islam, who have beliefs that, while quite wacky, probably technically satisfy a reasonable definition of racist); I'm surprised it doesn't give you some pause to say that sort of thing to a Jewish person whose family escaped persecution in Russia and other Slavic nations. Persecution that is ongoing now.
There are Jewish fascists, of course. But they live in settlements on the West Bank and hate Palestinians and other Arabs and Muslims and want to rob, expel, and kill them. They don't care about the Russians. Some of their neighbors are Russians Jews who emigrated, despite the pleasant conditions for Jews in Mother Russia, and ended up getting settled in the occupied territories with freaks from Brooklyn who want to kill people. I underestand that a fair number of them end up going back to Russia. I would too, if I had to live in a free-fire zone and my neighbors either hated me because I lived on stolen land or wanted to kill the native inhabitants and steal more land.
Fortunately for me (or I'd never have existed) my ancestors moved here to places where the land had been stolen and the natives killed by earlier immigrants/invaders some time before they arrived. Their descendents didn't consider us fully human either, but they were willing to let us set up shop as peddlars and bookies and small time hoodlums and textile workers or clothes salesmen and even go to college to become engineers, because low-life as we were there were always the African Americans who were lower down on the pecking order.
Maybe anti-semitism not a feature of a backwards culture. It's not important to what I was saying to hold the Slavic cultures are backward. Maybe the Slavic intellectuals are wrong to say that. Or maybe the Slavophiles are right and the differences are in favor of traditional authoritarian quasi-theocratic socities. (Ha!) Whatever. My point is really just that it's important to acknowledge that there is pervasive, deep-rooted, and persistant historical and present antisemitism in Slavic countries. Maybe it's just ethnic/religious prejudice in a, what -- even the Russians don't say they have a normal culture. They say they want one. Whatever kind of cultures they have. But just as Americans have to confront racism here, Russians and other Slavs have to do the same with antisemitism (aming other prejudices). And of course Israeli Jews in Israel, etc. Few if any countries are free of the taint. In that regard we are all backward.
