Surely another explanation is that Bin Laden is long dead. He was in very bad health and needs dialysis because of a kidney condition. This is hardly available in the boondocks. Time has an article in which about half of intelligence operatives think he is dead:

So the hunt for Bin Laden is a convenient wild ghost chase.
