Alas, these are the values and concerned of the "ordinary people" and we should embrace them, as some on this list would argue ;).
More seriously, some people are intrinsically incapable of adopting or supporting a progressive/liberal point of view, and they should be written off by any progressive or liberal campaign (whose energies and resources could be more efficiently used elsewhere.) This seems to be consistent with behavioral research http://www.wam.umd.edu/~hannahk/conservatism.html.
Of course identifying these types solely by geographical location is crude, but it certainly indicates statistical probablities.
