There is a [valid] theory that belief in and tithing to God and

They got much *less* than nothing. Unlike those who were cured by their belief in the efficacity of a witches' spell.

CB: The theory goes on to speculate that some of them may have gotten:

the general theory of their world, its encyclopaedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d’honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification, their sigh as oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions and a sort of opium . (smile)

All of which might amount to less than what you get from some witches' spells.
