Not so weird -- Euroliberalism has tried to use the machinery of the EU to throttle the welfare state.
The populist bashing of the Eurocrats, however, misses two points -- (1) the utopia of European-wide rising social standards, free education. eco-industries and multiculturalism is something worth fighting for, and (2) neoliberalism has been introduced by national governments, using the excuse of Euroization.
For all the problems of the EU, it's pretty harmless compared to the predatory monster otherwise known as the US superstate, which spends half its funds on permanent war, and has been captured by $3 billion in annual campaign donations.
