You're not differentiating here between the dismemberment of the USSR and the dismemberment of the Soviet system. Theoretically, one could have been done without the other. Dismantling the Union was basically a mechanism to get Gorbachev out of power, with the tacit understanding that we can always reunite the republics later on if we want to.
BTW, am I the only person who has noted the radical shift in Anglophone media coverage of Ukraine in the last few years?

People make a comparison to the USSR. The ruling class of the USSR wanted to destroy it. They wanted to become a capitalist ruling class and steal state property. It worked. But it's not like it fell spontaneously.
