It's been said that Bob would do almost anything for a buck, but he wouldn't murder. But Bob's income is above zero. Thus Bob must not actually have any qualms about murder.

I doubt Carrol's account is actually true, though. I'd be surprised if DP elites ever devote any thought to the possibility of a socialist revolution; they certainly have no reason to. Policies being unpopular don't require any explanation because public perception of policies and the outcomes of elections are almost entirely functions of incumbency and the unemployment rate.
