Reagan used to hand out George Gilder's book to everyone (title escapes). Gilder argued that men, by nature, were horrible, raping beasties and you needed the heterosexual family, wife at home, to keep them in line - which is just an updated version of Victorian ideology. Men were supposed to engage in competition in the market and state, and it was a horrible, grueling, soul-crushing competition. Women tended hearth and home creating a haven of virtue to which men returned to be replenished and revived, their competitive factionalism tamed so they could go back out into the market and polity, compete some more, but tempered by contact with female virtue.
