If you attend college and you don't see that the people around you who are doing the best are those who have joined forces in collaboration, you've wasted everyone's time. As for Joanna's quip from the hapless programmer, when I was at UCB there was always a huge emphasis on shared work in labs, etc. Many of the assignments were designed specifically to force collaborative work: there simply wasn't enough time to do the whole project by yourself.

Those in my industry who "never learned this" are passing the buck from their own inadequacy. I hardly think it's limited to one occupation: most people suck at what they do.
