Sounds to me like pretty straightforward bourgeois morality. Or am I speaking in shibboleths now? I suspect for a lot of people their work has an awful lot to do with the way they think about themselves. But, as with the contention that it's always harder to find work when you're out of work, I'm pulling that out of the air, so I might just be plain wrong.

But the moralism of it all seems pretty pervasive, and it seems to cut across class. There must be studies on these kinds of attitudes, segmented by things like race, income, ed level, and so on. But I don't have time at the moment to go looking for it. Come to think of it, I shouldn't be writing this email. :)
