Small Group Breakout Question

What is predatory lending and how has it affected your family life or the lives of your loved ones?

Adam – Overturning Glass Stegal, rise of (????) and deregulation is problem that Occupy Detroit wants to solve. Predatory lending: lenders just want commissions, don’t care about the signers.

Kim – Predatory Lending is exploiting people and (????) 80/90% of income for housing; payday loans and check cashing.

Steve – Predatory lending isn’t always easy to identify. It takes lack of information. Hard for some people to determine value without proper information. Must retain our values of decency. We decide our value, nor someone else.

Bob – Legal aid worker who’s with foreclosures for a few years. Described how borrowers were taken advantage of. The loans were designed to fail. All the lenders care about is the fees. They preyed on poor communities, seniors and many good people lost their homes because of unethical foreclosures.

Rich – the lenders preying on the students are predatory. The students are desperate and don’t know what they’re getting into.

Proposals

Rene Lee(?) would like support of Occupy Detroit, as he plans to attend the upcoming Tuesday City Council meetings, to be an Occupy Detroit rep. Q: Will you coordinate your own proposal? A: Yes. I welcome others to come too. Rene says he’ll be the face of Occupy Detroit, not really the voice. CONSENSUS REACHED Alyssa with Occupy Yourself – Give Occupy Yourself $350 for a dinner/fashion show here at Grand Circus Park, at which t-shirts will be sold for $10, which money will be given back, approximately $250. T-shirts will say occupy yourself, Detroit. The money will not be used on the shirts. Amended to $200 for dinner/show/karaoke, not shirts. CONSENSUS REACHED Sarah – 5,000 square foot Southwest Detroit storefront has been donated. No one should be able to live there because not everyone can live there. CONSENSUS REACHED Sarah – Themes for tonight’s rally – Emergency Managers, Water grab, Foreclosures, welfare cuts, economic justice, restorative justice, peace zones; facilitated by Rakiba, Destiny, Jerry and Sarah. Have soapbox space and performance for other issues, like bus service. CONSENSUS REACHED Question Board Review

1) Why is no one talking about 11/17? If you want someone to take your email, then take emails. See the website.
