Those figures deal with the aggregate of consumption expenditure and goods produced. They don't deal with *what* is being consumed and produced. What Chuck is describing is how whole industries have ceased to exist in the U.S. This matters unless we believe that scrap paper exports (our number 1 export) to China are equivalent to automobile exports.
