god does that elicit traumatizing flashbacks of the terror of being "in
crisis", trying to get help, and being told that, with $5 in the bank, a
car worth $3000, a kid and an apartment, you are eligible for nothing. you
can go stand in line for five hours and see if someone might be able to
scrape together a loan from some emergency fund. you can go try to food
banks but they are all 10 miles away at the other end of the county and you
don't have bus fare or gas money to go. or go fill out a 3 ring binder full
of applications and a long as some long ass occupational safety tests for
jobs at a temp job service so you can wash dishes somewhere -- never quite
sure if getting questions right about what and what isn't safe or hazardous
on the job will disqualify you or not.
